Who is Charles Haynes?

A question that is often asked of me is where I am from. I was not raised in Watauga County, but I spent a lot of my youth visiting and vacationing in Watauga County. I was raised in Statesville, the county seat of Iredell County. My parents were educators; my mother taught music in elementary school while my father taught history in high school before working his way into administration. My parents met in Boone, during summer school at Appalachian State. We spent summers in Boone when I was infant while my father finished up grad school. When I was older, I joined my father attending App State football games. We bonded over countless trips up and down the mountain during the fall watching the Mountaineers.

When time came to make a decision about college, there was only place I wanted to be. I wanted to live in Boone, and I wanted to attend Appalachian State. During college, I met my wife, Caitlin. We love Boone so much, we decided to get married at Daniel Boone Gardens in 2008. We have two daughters, Charlotte (5) and Caroline (3) and enjoy summer nights at Valle Crucis Park listening to music and Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market.

After graduating college, I worked in hospitality and banking before landing at the Clerk’s office in 2012. Primarily, I worked in the Civil Division as a deputy clerk in district court and juvenile court until 2019, when I was promoted to Assistant Clerk. I continued some courtroom duties as an Assistant Clerk while supervising the civil division’s deputy clerks and student interns from Appalachian State. In April of 2021, I was appointed to complete the term of retiring Clerk of Court Diane Cornett Deal, the same clerk who hired me in 2012. Since becoming clerk, we have had a clean financial audit from the State of North Carolina, and an effective audit from the Administrative Office of Courts Internal Procedures Audit.
